A reading sheet is most useful when the Chinese text stays visible and you check the pronunciation before studying it. This example uses two short prompts: 你好。去學中文。 We will add Pinyin, choose one intended reading, and connect familiar syllables with Zhuyin.
Add Pinyin to a manageable passage
Open Chinese to Pinyin. Replace the example in Chinese text with 你好。去學中文。 and choose Add Pinyin. Leave Notation set to Tone marks for the first pass.
The Your reading sheet area places a reading above each matched character. Punctuation remains in the text. The tool looks for dictionary words before falling back to shorter matches, so its grouping may differ from your own sentence divisions.
Use a short passage from material you understand. This makes it practical to compare each reading with your course or dictionary. The input limit is 10,000 characters, but filling the box is not a useful first exercise.
Review an alternative before you study it
In our verified example, 學 initially appeared with xiáo. Under Check alternative readings, its selector offered xiáo and xué. Choose xué for “learn” in this prompt. The sheet updates immediately.
The reviewed reading is nǐ hǎo。qù xué zhōng wén。. This correction is why a dictionary result needs review before it becomes a study card. A first suggestion does not guarantee that the intended meaning has been identified.
Watch for underlined Chinese characters. They have no usable reading in the current lookup. A missing entry or interrupted dictionary download can leave a gap; the character stays visible. If the page reports an incomplete load, retry Add Pinyin. Check unresolved words elsewhere.
Traditional Chinese has the widest coverage here. Names, regional readings and some Simplified forms need particular care. Alternatives appear only when the dictionary contains them.
Connect whole syllables with Zhuyin
Open Chinese to Zhuyin, paste the same text and choose Show pronunciation. Its reading list includes both systems. For 你好, compare nǐ hǎo with ㄋㄧˇ ㄏㄠˇ. For 去, compare qù with ㄑㄩˋ.
Compare complete syllables rather than replacing letters one at a time. In qù, Pinyin writes u after q for the vowel represented by ㄩ. The PolyU spelling reference explains that the dots on ü are omitted after j, q and x.
The alternative chosen on the Pinyin sheet does not carry into another tool. Our Zhuyin lookup still showed ㄒㄧㄠˊ first for 學, with ㄒㄩㄝˊ listed as an alternative. Keep the intended xué / ㄒㄩㄝˊ reading in your notes.
The Pinyin and Zhuyin comparison explains shortened finals and tone notation. Both systems describe Mandarin readings; changing notation does not translate Chinese into a different language.
Keep the reviewed Pinyin sheet
Return to the reviewed Pinyin page. Copy Pinyin gives the reading alone. Copy with Chinese keeps dictionary groups together, producing 你好(nǐ hǎo)。去(qù)學(xué)中文(zhōng wén)。 in this example.
Download sheet saves pinyin-reading-sheet.html. Open it in a browser to see readings above the characters. It is an HTML study sheet, not a PDF or Word file. Print sheet opens the browser’s print workflow.
For numbered notes, switch Notation to Tone numbers. The checked example becomes ni3 hao3。qu4 xue2 zhong1 wen2。. Save after reviewing: reloading starts a new page session, and your chosen alternative is not an account-backed vocabulary record.
Common questions
Does the sheet translate the meaning?
No. Pinyin records a Mandarin reading. Keep a trusted meaning or your course’s translation beside the passage when needed.
Will the download contain both Pinyin and Zhuyin?
The Pinyin download contains Pinyin annotations. The Zhuyin tool provides separate reading and study features; their results are not combined automatically.
Are dictionary tones a complete speaking guide?
No. Connected speech can change how tones sound. Use listening material and instruction alongside the written annotations.
Is the passage uploaded for conversion?
Lookup runs in your browser and requests public dictionary files as needed. The requested file groups can reflect characters being looked up. Keep a separate copy of work you want to retain.
Make a sheet worth practising.
Add a short passage, review it, then keep the checked result.
