A little understanding. A lot of possibility.

Type your first words in Zhuyin.

Follow a short, hands-on lesson: find the symbols, enter a tone, choose a character, and build a word.

Your first two characters

Let’s type 你好

You will enter a pronunciation, choose a matching character and repeat. Use the on-screen keys or the standard Dachen positions on a physical keyboard.

Keep this lesson open beside the keyboard. No installation is needed.

Open keyboard in a new tab
你好ㄋㄧˇ ㄏㄠˇnǐ hǎo · hello
  1. 01

Start in the Zhuyin symbols box

Choose Zhuyin · 注音 as the input method. Click the small symbols box below the text editor. This is where your phonetic input appears; the large editor holds the Chinese text you have selected.

Leave Learning mode on while you learn the keys. It helps guide input combinations. You can use the on-screen keys at any point.

  2. 02

    Build the reading for 你

Enter ㄋ, then ㄧ, then the third-tone mark ˇ. On the physical keyboard, use the keys below without Shift.

    Sㄋ+Uㄧ+3ˇ→ㄋㄧˇ

Characters sharing that reading appear beside the input. Find and click 你. It moves into the large editor, and the symbols box is ready for another syllable.

  3. 03

    Add the reading for 好

Now enter ㄏㄠˇ, then choose 好 from the candidates.

    Cㄏ+Lㄠ+3ˇ→ㄏㄠˇ

Your editor now contains 你好. Click Copy when you want to use it somewhere else. If you choose the wrong character, Undo lets you revise the editor.

  4. 04

    Try a whole word

With smart composition enabled, you can enter both readings before selecting a result: ㄋㄧˇㄏㄠˇ. Look for 你好 as a phrase. Candidate order may vary with the dictionary and your saved choices.

For longer text, expand the candidate list to see full phrases. If a composed sentence offers Edit words, you can change a word before inserting the whole sentence.

A few useful controls

Click a candidate
Insert that character or phrase.
Enter in symbols box
Insert the first candidate when choices are available.
Alt + 1–5
Choose a numbered visible candidate. Smaller screens show fewer slots.
Page Up / Page Down
Move between candidate pages.
Space after symbols
Enter the first-tone syllable boundary.

In the large text editor, Enter adds a new line. The same key can do a different job when the symbols box has focus.

When the result is not what you expect

  • Check the tone. ㄋㄧˇ and ㄋㄧˊ are different readings.
  • Check the active field. Enter phonetic symbols in the small symbols box and edit finished text in the large editor.
  • Check the layout. The hints on this page use standard Dachen positions.
  • Check your operating system’s input mode. If a second input method intercepts the keys, switch it to direct Latin input while using this website.
  • Try a smaller unit. Select one syllable at a time when a name or uncommon phrase does not appear as a whole.

This walkthrough follows the i2Bopomo keyboard’s Dachen layout and current candidate controls. For the writing conventions behind the input, see our tone guide.
