From sounds to characters

Turn Mandarin Pinyin into Chinese characters.

Enter Pinyin in the Input code box to find Chinese characters and dictionary phrases. Use your physical keyboard or the on-screen keys, then choose a candidate to add it to the editor.

Start with a familiar word such as nihao. You can build a message a word at a time, revise it in the editor, and copy or download the finished text.

Type with or without tone numbers

Which Pinyin spellings work?

The dictionary includes plain-letter and numbered readings. Both nihao and ni3hao3 offer 你好. Ordinary number keys remain part of the code, so adding a tone number does not choose a candidate.

Uppercase letters are accepted, and spaces and apostrophes in pasted codes are ignored for lookup. The spellings nv, nü, and nu: are treated alike. Typing v is the simplest way to enter ü without changing your keyboard layout.

Accented Pinyin such as nǐ hǎo is not converted directly by this keyboard. Use the Pinyin tone converter to change tone marks to numbers, then paste the result into Input code.

How to select and browse candidates

Several characters can share a pronunciation. Read the proposed text before choosing it. Results can also complete a longer dictionary code, so a short input may offer both individual characters and phrases.

Use the previous and next candidate controls, or Page Up and Page Down while editing a code. Show full candidates gives longer choices more room without making the keyboard taller.

Click any candidate to insert it at the remembered editor position. Space or Alt+1 through Alt+5 select candidates when the code caret is at the end and no code text is selected. Enter adds a line break to the editor; it does not confirm a Pinyin candidate.

Revise your text as you go

Choose where the next word belongs, correct a selection, and use Undo or Redo to recover an edit.

How editing and display controls work

Click in the text editor to set an insertion point, or select text you want to replace. The next chosen candidate uses that position. Clear input code removes only the current code; the trash button clears the editor and the current code.

Undo and Redo are available below the editor. Open Text style to choose the font, size, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, and color for the whole editor. Text direction is also available in Text style. These controls change presentation, not the selected Chinese characters.

Switch input methods with Select Input Method to continue writing in the same editor.

Copy text or download a keepsake

Copy editable text, save a Word document, or turn the editor contents into a PNG image.

What each export contains

Copy text copies the entire editor contents as plain text. Save Word creates an editable .docx document with the selected font, size, text styles, color, direction, and line breaks.

Save image centers the entire text on a white background and downloads a PNG using your selected font, size, text styles, and color. Chinese glyphs depend on the fonts available in your browser. For very long writing, use Save Word or shorten the editor contents before making an image.

Search your text opens the editor contents with the selected service when you click Open. This sends that text to the chosen external service.

Chinese to Pinyin works in the other direction: start with Chinese text and inspect available dictionary readings. It is a separate reading aid, and some characters or phrases may be missing from its dictionary.

Return to your browser draft

Keep working in the same browser, with dictionary files loaded as you need them.

What is saved, and what needs a connection?

When browser storage is available, the editor saves a draft on this device. A tab keeps its own ongoing edits; a newly opened tab can begin with the latest saved draft. Switching input methods in the same tab preserves the editor text.

Pinyin lookup runs in your browser, but additional dictionary files download from the site as you type. If a loading error appears, try the code again when your connection is available. Offline operation is not guaranteed.

Browser storage is not an account backup. Private browsing, storage restrictions, or clearing site data can remove the draft. Copy or download important writing; website advertising and measurement services are covered separately in the Privacy Policy.

Do I need to install a Chinese keyboard?

No installation is needed for this page. Click Input code and use your normal keyboard, or click the on-screen keys. Choose a Chinese candidate to add it to the editor.

Can I type Pinyin without tones?

Yes. For example, nihao offers 你好. Numbered input such as ni3hao3 is also supported for dictionary entries. If you have tone marks such as nǐ hǎo, convert them to numbered Pinyin first.

How do I type ü?

Use v in Input code, as in nv. The keyboard also recognizes ü and u:, so nü and nu: produce the same lookup. If text copied from another app does not match, replace ü with v.

Why is my word missing?

Check the code, try a shorter word, and browse additional candidate pages. The keyboard searches its dictionary rather than generating or translating arbitrary sentences. Additional results may need a dictionary download; if a loading error appears, try the input again.

Is my writing uploaded for conversion?

Character lookup and exports run in your browser; the keyboard does not send the editor text to a conversion server. Drafts are stored in this browser when permitted. The website may load advertising and measurement services, and clicking Open under Search your text sends the text to the selected service.

Will my draft be there when I return?

When browser storage is available, the keyboard restores a draft and keeps each tab's ongoing edits separate. Private browsing, storage restrictions, or clearing site data can remove it. Use Copy text or a download to keep a separate copy; this is not account-based cloud storage.
