How to type Cantonese with Jyutping.

Type your first Cantonese words using Jyutping. Enter a reading, choose the Chinese characters and learn the shortcuts used by the i2Bopomo keyboard.

Your first Cantonese word

Type nei5hou2.
Choose 你好.

The reading box turns Jyutping into candidate Chinese words. You choose the intended characters, then continue writing in the editor.

Start with this greeting. The keyboard accepts both the numbered reading nei5hou2 and tone-free neihou.

    Find the Cantonese reading box

Open the Cantonese keyboard and make sure the input method is Cantonese. Click its small phonetic input box. The large editor holds the Chinese text after you choose a candidate.

  2. 02

    Keep the typed word together

Enter nei5hou2 without pressing Space between syllables. On a learning page we write nei5 hou2 to make the syllable boundary easy to see. While typing on this keyboard, physical Space can select a candidate.

    nei5hou2你好

You can also try neihou. Tone-free input is convenient when you do not remember a tone, but it can leave more choices to distinguish. Dictionary coverage and candidate order vary by reading.

  3. 03

    Choose the intended word

Look for 你好 and click it. Use the candidate paging arrows for more choices, or open the expanded candidate panel when you need more room to review them.

Space selects the first available candidate. Alt plus the displayed candidate number selects that visible choice. Ordinary number keys enter tone digits; they do not select a Cantonese candidate by themselves.

  4. 04

    Continue, correct and copy

The selected word appears in the editor. Type another reading to add more text. Undo reverses a mistaken choice, and Copy copies the finished text.

Enter inserts a line break. Use a candidate click, Space or the Alt shortcut to choose the word before starting a new line.

Try a useful second expression

Study readingm4 goi1Keyboard inputm4goi1Choose唔該

唔該 can thank someone for a service or small favour, or politely get their attention. The first syllable is just m4; do not invent a vowel to fill the gap.

The keyboard also accepts mgoi. Choosing the characters is still part of the task: matching letters alone do not guarantee the meaning you want.

If the word does not appear

  • Check the system: Jyutping is different from Yale and Mandarin Pinyin. A spelling from another system may not match.
  • Review the final: aa/a, oe/eo and m/n/ng differences can change the lookup.
  • Try both forms: numbered and tone-free readings may return different sets of candidates.
  • Shorten the phrase: enter a smaller word or individual character if a longer expression is missing.

Proper names, specialist terms and uncommon expressions may be absent. The dictionary is a typing aid, not a guarantee of every possible word or pronunciation.
