Mandarin sounds, written with letters.

Pinyin and Zhuyin: two ways to read Mandarin.

Compare Pinyin spellings and Bopomofo symbols through the same Mandarin words. Understand tone notation and choose a useful next step.

Two paths to the same reading

nǐ and ㄋㄧˇ
both lead to 你.

Pinyin and Zhuyin both represent Mandarin pronunciation. Pinyin uses Latin letters and spelling conventions; Zhuyin uses its own phonetic symbols. Neither system replaces the Chinese characters in ordinary written text.

Choose the system your course or reading material uses. If you already know one, whole syllables make a useful bridge to the other.

Pinyin drops the dots on ü after q.
Zhuyin keeps the symbol ㄩ.

Keep the word in view

The spelling systems do not map one letter to one symbol in every case.

Where the spellings differ

  • One initial, several letters: zh, ch and sh each name one Pinyin initial. Their Zhuyin counterparts are ㄓ, ㄔ and ㄕ.
  • ü can lose its dots: qù contains ㄩ even though Pinyin writes u. After n and l, keep ü distinct from u.
  • Shortened finals: shuǐ contains ㄨㄟ. Pinyin shortens uei to ui after an initial.
  • No-initial spellings: yuè uses y, while its Zhuyin reading begins directly with ㄩ.

Use complete examples to learn these patterns. A simple letter-replacement chart would hide important differences.

The tone marks need attention

Pinyin puts a tone mark over a vowel: mā, má, mǎ, mà. Zhuyin normally leaves first tone unmarked and writes the other three marks beside the syllable.

For the neutral tone, Pinyin leaves the syllable unmarked: ma. Zhuyin uses a dot, placed before the syllable in standard horizontal writing: ˙ㄇㄚ.

The same spoken tone changes apply whichever reading system you use. The two underlying third tones of 你好 do not become different words when you switch notation.

Notice Pinyin spelling rules

Focus on j/q/x with ü, the y/w spellings and shortened iu/ui/un finals. These rules explain why matching the sounds is easier than replacing symbols one at a time.
