CANTONESE / A PRACTICAL STUDY GUIDE

How to practice Cantonesetyping with Jyutping

Recall the reading. Use it in a word.

Try 食飯 in Cantonese practice. Keep the final k and the double aa, check sik6 faan6, then use sik6faan6 to look for the word on the keyboard.

Cantonese practice and the Cantonese keyboard solve two different problems. Practice checks whether you can recall a selected Jyutping reading. The keyboard uses your reading to find Chinese candidates. This routine connects the two with 食飯, “to eat a meal”: first check sik6 faan6, then use the reading to choose the written word.

01

Find one word you want to remember

Open Cantonese practice. The session begins with 你好. Use Next word until the prompt is 食飯, or study its card in the word list first. 食飯 is the sixteenth item in the current 24-word set.

Read the meaning before answering. Try to recall both syllables and both tone numbers in Your Jyutping. You can use Reading hint when needed; the purpose is to learn the chosen reading, not to guess indefinitely.

A practical first session might use three words you already recognize. Attempt each reading, inspect a mistake, and return to that word later. There is no timer forcing you to submit before you have checked the ending.

02

Use a mistake to locate the missing detail

The worked example deliberately enters sik6 fan6, then selects Check answer. The answer is rejected with guidance to check the letters and syllable count. Open Reading hint: the target is sik6 faan6. The second syllable needs aa.

Replace the answer with sik6 faan6 and check again. The verified feedback is Correct! sik6 faan6 — ready for the next word. Notice that both syllables keep tone 6 and the first keeps its final k.

The checker distinguishes formatting, spelling, and tone problems. If the letters match but a tone differs, its message identifies the syllable to review. Follow that clue instead of rewriting the entire answer at random.

Use ordinary letters and digits 1–6. Joined readings such as sik6faan6 also work in practice; spaces make the syllables easier to review. Tone-helper buttons insert a digit at the cursor when that is more convenient.

03

Read the session counters honestly

After correcting this one word, Completed shows 1 / 24. Unaided first check remains 0 because the first answer was wrong. Correcting the mistake still completes the word; repeatedly submitting it does not create extra completed items.

Opening the exercise’s Reading hint before a correct first answer also prevents that answer from counting as unaided. Use the hint when it helps. The two counters separate finishing an exercise from recalling it on the first check without that hint.

Progress lasts only until you leave or reload the page. Restart session clears the session counters. Keep your own short note of difficult words if you want to review them tomorrow; the tool does not create a saved study account.

The cards below the exercise remain useful for reference. Treat the score as a simple session aid, not a controlled exam: looking at other materials can help you answer even when the counter cannot know you did so.

04

Move the reviewed reading into real typing

Open the Cantonese keyboard and enter sik6faan6 in Input code. Keep the syllables together while typing, because physical Space can select a candidate. Find 食飯 and choose it.

Use the candidate arrows when necessary. Ordinary number keys enter tone digits; Alt plus a displayed candidate number selects that visible choice. You can always click the exact word instead. Check the characters in the large editor before copying them.

If you make a wrong selection, use Undo, then enter the reading again. End the session by typing one reviewed word successfully. For the next session, revisit the vowel contrast in the sound chart or the relevant tone patterns.

A FEW USEFUL DETAILS

Common questions

Is this testing my spoken Cantonese?

No. It checks a written Jyutping answer against the selected exercise reading. It does not record your microphone or assess your pronunciation.

Why is Listen unavailable on my device?

Listen requires an installed local Cantonese voice. When none is available, the page explains this and the exercise still works. The verified example was completed without audio.

Can I omit tones as I can on the keyboard?

The practice exercise requires a tone digit for every syllable. Tone-free keyboard lookup is a convenience for finding candidates, so its acceptance rules are different.

What if I know another pronunciation?

The exercise checks the reading in its hint. Cantonese words can have pronunciation variants or changed tones; a mismatch here is not a judgment about every speaker’s usage. Review the target and its context.

YOUR TURN

Correct one detail, then use the word.

Try 食飯, keep the aa in faan6, and bring the reviewed reading to the keyboard.
