Quick can reduce the number of letters you type for a character, but it changes the amount of information available to the lookup. This worked example uses 國: the full Cangjie code is WIRM, and its Quick alias here is WM. You will type both forms, compare their candidates, and select the same character twice.
Know the complete code before shortening it
Open the Cangjie and Quick comparison. Find the row for 國. It shows WIRM under Full code and WM under Quick. Keep both forms in your notes, with the Chinese character beside them.
For an unfamiliar character, begin with Cangjie code lookup rather than inventing a two-letter guess. The code you shorten must be the full code for the character form you intend to type. Similar-looking Traditional and Simplified forms may have different sequences.
Read WIRM as four letter keys in order. The root labels are 田、戈、口、一. They are code references, not a four-step drawing of the character. The code breakdown tool can help you connect a supplied sequence to its keys.
Keep the first and final letters
To derive this Quick alias, keep the first letter W and the last letter M. Leave out I and R: WIRM becomes WM. Do not take just the first two letters; WI is a different input.
A one-letter code stays one letter on this site: 日 A remains A. A two-letter code already contains its endpoints: 明 AB remains AB. Quick therefore does not save keystrokes for every character.
For another three-letter example, 好 VND becomes VD. Learn the complete form alongside the abbreviation so that you can return to it when a short lookup gives too many choices.
Quick is also called Simplified Cangjie. Here “simplified” describes the input code, not a requirement to output Simplified Chinese. The example continues to select the Traditional character 國.
Compare both inputs on the same keyboard
Open the Cangjie keyboard and enter wirm in Input code. In the verified lookup, the visible candidates were 國 and 㽣. Choose 國 by clicking its candidate.
Put a line break after the selected character in the editor, then enter wm in the code field. Its first visible page included 國、置、国、园、鸭. Choose 國 again. The actual saved image above contains 國 on each of two lines.
Both lookups use the same Cangjie input method. There is no separate Quick switch to turn on. The results can combine full-code matches with Quick aliases; even the full WIRM example has more than one candidate.
Use the candidate arrows or Page Down for more choices. Ordinary displayed number shortcuts can select a visible Cangjie candidate when the caret is at the end of the code. Enter inserts a line break; it is not the candidate-confirm key.
Decide what you want to practise
Use full codes when you want to strengthen the link between a character’s shapes and the complete key sequence. Use Quick when reducing input length helps and you are comfortable checking a broader list. Fewer typed letters do not automatically mean faster completed text.
After a mistaken choice, select Undo and retry with the full code. You can also use a full code as a check when two similar candidates appear under the same short alias. Inspect the final editor text before copying it elsewhere.
In Cangjie practice, the requested answers are full codes. For 國, wm is therefore not a completed exercise answer; use wirm. Keyboard lookup and full-code recall intentionally have different acceptance rules.
Repeat the comparison with one other known character, then stop. Keeping a small full-code/Quick pair list is more useful than memorizing candidate numbers that may change on another keyboard.
Common questions
Can I shorten every code to its first two letters?
No. Use the first and last letters of the full sequence. WIRM becomes WM, while VND becomes VD. One-letter and two-letter codes retain their existing form here.
Will Quick always put my character first?
No. It can match many characters, and candidate order depends on the dictionary. Check the character itself and page through results when necessary.
Does Quick work only with Traditional Chinese?
The abbreviation describes input, not the writing system of the result. Traditional and Simplified forms can appear when present in the dictionary. Choose the form you actually need.
Why does a full code sometimes return several choices?
Full codes are not guaranteed unique, and this site also retains compatibility and Quick entries. A longer code usually gives more information, but selection remains part of typing.
Try both routes to the same character.
Type wirm, then wm, and compare how much choice remains before you select 國.
