The goal of a practice session is to recall a reading and understand a correction. This example includes an intentional mistake so you can see what the checker measures, how hints help, and why a successful correction can still leave accuracy below 100%.
Start with the word, not the answer
Open Zhuyin typing practice. Read the Chinese word on the practice card before touching Show hint. In a fresh verified session, the first word was 你好. If your card shows another word, apply the same routine to that prompt.
Decide what you are practicing. You might know the pronunciation but forget key positions, or recognize the word while still needing its reading. Those are different tasks. Use the symbol chart for positions and the pronunciation tool for a reading you need to learn.
Listen is available only when the browser has a suitable local Mandarin voice. You can complete the written exercise without audio. A voice is a listening aid; the checker does not listen to or grade your own pronunciation.
Enter the symbols and their dictionary tones
Click Your Zhuyin reading. You can tap the practice keys or use a physical keyboard. For 你好, the standard Dachen sequence is S, U, 3, C, L, 3, without Shift. The field becomes ㄋㄧˇㄏㄠˇ.
Choose Check answer or press Enter in the reading field. This task checks the reading, not the selection of Chinese candidates. There is no need to type 你好 into the answer field; it is already the prompt you are reading.
Spaces between syllables are optional here, and first tone needs no visible mark. Keep other tone marks: ㄋㄧˇ ㄏㄠˇ is different from ㄋㄧˊ ㄏㄠˇ. Use the dictionary readings for the exercise rather than rewriting tones to imitate connected speech.
Use the feedback to repair one thing
In the worked session, we deliberately entered ㄋㄧˊ ㄏㄠˇ. The checker rejected it and asked us to check symbols and tones. The wrong part is the second-tone mark after ㄋㄧ; the target reading has third tone.
Choose Show hint if you need the target. Compare one syllable at a time, change ˊ to ˇ, then check ㄋㄧˇ ㄏㄠˇ. The verified feedback was “Correct! Choose Next word to keep going.” After a correct answer, the input is disabled until you move on.
Before checking your corrected answer, try hiding the hint and entering the reading from memory. When the hint is visible and your typed prefix matches the target, the practice keys can highlight the next symbol. Use that help to find an unfamiliar key, then attempt another word without following a highlighted path.
Read the score before starting another round
The example has two checked attempts: one wrong and one right. Its result is 1 word completed, 50% accuracy and a current streak of 1. Correcting the answer does not erase the earlier attempt. That makes the score useful for noticing what needs another pass.
Choose Next word to continue. Do a few careful words and stop while you can still name the mistakes you corrected. Revisit those symbols or tones in the chart instead of rushing through cards just to increase the completed count.
Completed words and accuracy are saved in this browser. In the verified reload, those totals remained, while the current streak returned to zero. Reset progress clears the stored practice totals; use it when you intentionally want a new record, not after every incorrect attempt.
Common questions
Can I use the same physical keys as the keyboard?
Yes. The practice keys use the standard Dachen positions shown on the site. If another operating-system input method intercepts them, switch to direct Latin input or tap the on-screen symbols.
Do hints lower the score?
Showing a hint does not itself count as an answer attempt. The displayed accuracy comes from checked answers. If you use hints, treat that score as supported practice rather than unaided recall.
Does Next word count as a correct answer?
No. It moves to another prompt. A completed word is recorded when the checker accepts a reading, so skipping a difficult word is not the same as solving it.
Will my progress follow me to another device?
It is stored in this browser, not an account. The My phrases page can export a backup containing settings, personal phrases and practice progress. Importing replaces the local data.
Try a short, careful round.
Read the word, make one attempt, then explain the correction to yourself.
